Arranging the turn-in containers for the highest appearance scores

These pages are being developed to show contest teams - veterans as well as novices - examples of turn-in containers.  Some containers will be arranged for the highest appearance scores, while others will demonstrate common errors, such as the use of illegal lettuce and garnish, the effect of ragged cuts, and other errors.

Novice teams should know that the turn-in containers are all the same - standard 9" by 9" Styrofoam, unpartitioned containers - which are numbered with the team's number by the KCBS representatives (usually) at the cook's meeting on Friday night.  Each team will receive one container for each category.

Note:  Do not make a common mistake.  When you turn in the container for judging, you must be sure that the team's number is on the top and not on the bottom!

A second note:  between Friday night and the Saturday turn-in time, a team will sometimes indent its turn-in box, because the Styrofoam is so soft.  This is a "mark" and illegal, so the team's entry will be disqualified if it is submitted in that container.  Don't submit an entry in a container with any indentation marks or discolorations.  Instead, ask the KCBS Rep, and you will exchange the marked container for a new one.

Below are some examples of turn-in boxes.  Click on the small image to enlarge.
