On Saturday, June 3, bbq teams competed for the title of “California State Champion” at the 2nd Annual Barbeques Galore Surf & Turf BBQ Classic. (Click here for a list of the winners.) The event’s title sponsor was Barbeques Galore, America’s largest retail chain barbecue stores, and was sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society.
The Grand Champion was awarded $1,000 in cash plus a Kingfisher Kountry Kooker. Reserve Champion received $500 and a Cookshack Smoker. Winners through 10th place in each of the 5 categories (chicken, ribs, pork, brisket and seafood) split an additional $4,000 in cash and prizes!
The event included a street festival, a vintage and classic car show, a children’s fun center with llama rides, and the California Highway Patrol's equipment display. Nationally recognized barbecue expert, Smoky Hale, offered his “ten rules for successful broiling” and his autographed copies of his latest book. Also, for the first time in California, BBQ TV filmed the event for its syndicated webcast production.
HOT COUNTRY, the official media partner, hosted the entertainment that featured a variety of live musical acts and music from the radio station. Event sponsors included Barbeques Galore, Kingfisher Kountry Kookers, PacBell, Worldwide Environmental Products, City of Imperial Beach, Trader Publications, Cox Communications, U-Haul Company, Port of San Diego and Q Productions.
The Barbeques Galore Surf & Turf BBQ Classic was held along five city blocks just north of the host hotel, the Seacoast Inn, located at 800 Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach, just south of downtown San Diego.
