An overview of the Team of the Year rules

REDONDO BEACH, California -- This is an overview of the Team of the Year rules.  Note that this is only an Overview of the Rules.  The Team of the Year 2001 contest is governed by the detailed rules available online and from the chairman, Perry Smith.

The "ToY Year" is from September 1 to August 31 of each year.  ToY winners are selected on the basis of the points they accumulate at each contest in which they compete during the ToY Year.  To receive points at a particular cook-off, the team's cook(s) must have been scbbqa members during that cook-off.

Each scbbqa team accumulates points based on its finishes in the overall and four individual meat categories (i.e. five categories).  The winner of the chicken category at each qualifying cook-off receives 5, 10 or 15 points (depending on the number of competitors);  the second place finisher receives 4, 8 or 12 points;   etc., down to the 5th place finisher.  Similar points are accumulated for the top five finishers in the other categories, including the overall category.

At the end of the ToY Year, the points are totaled for each team in the five categories for each cook-off in which it competed.  Then in each of the five categories, each team's top five finishes are selected.

The winner of each of the five Team of the Year award is the team which accumulated the most points in its five best finishes in that category.

Eligible teams

To be eligible to receive points for each barbeque cook-off, the team's head cook must be an scbbqa member.

To be eligible to win a ToY 2001 Award, the team must have competed in at least three KCBS-sanctioned or scbbqa-approved barbecue cook-offs in California.

Eligible contests

In order for an eligible team to receive ToY points at a barbecue contest, the contest must be either KCBS-sanctioned or scbbqa-approved.  (This rule was adopted in order to qualify the West Coast Championship Contest, which has been conducted under KCBS rules but without KCBS certification.)

This means that an scbbqa team may earn ToY points for its finishes in any KCBS-sanctioned contest anywhere in the U.S. (or world, for that matter).  However, in order for an scbbqa team to receive points at a non-California contest, the team must provide the complete contest results to the scbbqa ToY Chairman within 30 days after the contest.  Otherwise, the points will not be credited to the team!

For further information, consult the complete ToY rules.
