Association members: matching names and faces
Most of us have a
problem matching names and faces. At some barbecue events, like
QFests, everyone will have name tags. But these are the exception
at barbecue contests, so these pages will help members match who is who.
As these pages are developed, they will begin with an almost random
selection of names and faces. Soon, however, these pages will be
listed alphabetically, so that every member's name can be matched with
that member's face.
Note: Association members are asked to
submit a short story -- about 250 words -- about themselves.
Please include information such as: the type of barbecue you
like; the barbecue equipment you use; whether you compete
or judge or just enjoy; your significant other and
children; etc. Also please include a digital photo -- see
the photo suggestions. The
members are listed in the first-name alphabetical order.
For some reason lost in the mists of ancient history, Bill became
"Big Bill" Stadler. He attended the 1999 QFest in
Carlsbad, where he met many other California barbecue veterans, like Di Wilson, Bill
Mauer, Joe O'Connell and many others. Bill's better half -- much
better half -- is Susan Hickok, who is a delightful friend.
Bill serves as the Association's in-house photographer -- in real
life he's a technical director at KABC.
Bill Wight got interested in barbecue in 1997 and discovered the
internet BBQ List. From that list, Bill helped to get the Southern
California members together for a mini Q-Fest. From those informal
gatherings, the SCBBQA was born. Sill served as a board member for
two years. Bill's contributions to
barbecue are limitless. Bill edited (which means that he organized
and wrote) the world-famous BBQ FAQ, which contains everything
there is to know about barbecue, with contributors including the
who's-who of barbecue, from Danny Gaulden, Kit Anderson, the late Belly
Maynard, and many, many others. Bill is a KCBS certified Bbq Judge
and has judged many California Bbq contests.
Bill serves as the Association's resident expert on grilling California
tri-tip. He supervised the grilling of the tri-tip at three Q-Fests
and Cook's Dinners at several Bbq competitions. Bill uses the classic
Santa Maria Style method to make
the perfect tri-tip. In addition to tri-tip, Bill enjoys grilling
chicken, seafood, and kabobs. Bill's interests extend beyond barbecue and includes chili -- Bill
served as a judge at a recent chili cook-off -- as well as Indian cuisine
and many other food types. Bill competes in Bbq competitions as a
member of the Coyote Road Kill team.
At the Autumn 2001 QFest, Bill gave his Salsa Seminar, where he
taught members how to make four of the classic salsas.
Carl has been with the Association for years, but until recently he
concentrated on judging contests rather than competing. Last
October, however, Carl competed in the BBQ 4 Kids contest
in El Cajon. What's more, he competed solo -- without any
assistants -- so he was up all night tending the fire. In future
contests, will Carl compete alone?
Carl serves as a director and officer of the Association and is the
Association's editor. As editor, Carl is responsible to gather
articles, have them edited and printed, and mail them in the form of the
Smokin Times Newsletter.
Dan Cannon is the chief cook at Coyote Road Kill. Dan
helped found the Association and served as its first President.
Dan is famous for his barbecue, especially his brisket and
sausage. At many contests, Dan's brisket wins the blue ribbon, and
Dan often teaches other members how to make his world-class sausage.
Dan competes with his wife, Barbara, who also watches their two dogs.
Dan and his wife Denise come to QFests and picnics to
enjoy authentic pit barbecue. (Here Dan is playing with Cody, his
grand-daughter.)

David is one of the Association's major benefactors and a great
friend of the barbecue "Qmunity". David is a Vietnam
veteran, holder of the Purple Heart, and now owns a retail bookseller
which does business on the Internet as New Books
Cheap. David supplies barbecue veterans across America with the
latest barbecue books. And his prices are only 40% of retail --
that's 60% below regular prices!!
David is contributing over $10,000 to the Association for its
children's charities in the coming year. In 2002, the Association
plans to hold twelve contests and barbecue events that will include
picnics for needy children and their families.
David now lives in Washington State, but he is a frequent visitor to
Southern California. The barbecue Q'munity is very proud of David
and happy that he is a friend.
Dean and Gina Hayes are Association members who compete on the team
called Lakeside BBQ. Dean's team won a California State
championship in 2001, and he hopes to win another state championship
title in 2002.
They are actively involved in the Association's mission of helping
needy children. Gina is the organizer of the Association's
Christmas Party for needy children, which will be held in Lakeside on
December 15, 2001.
Greg is "Smokin' Lizard" and his team is OInk, Cluck
& Moo. Greg's generosity in the wake of 9/11 -- when he
traveled to New York City
to help -- was written up by the Bakersfield
Californian and a story entitled Smokin
Lizard Freedom Tour on the Motley Fool website.
Greg's pit is an oversized pink pig (see the photograph), which he
pulls to catering gigs, contests and other barbecue events around the
U.S.
Greg's
website contains information about his award-winning sauce, his team
and his many interests.
Kyle is a native of Kansas City, Missouri and was raised on the sweet
flavors of hickory at his favorite barbecue joints like Rosedale and
L.C.'s in Kansas City.
Upon departing for Oklahoma to study the weather in college, Kyle
struggled to find a local barbecue joint that pleased his palette with
real barbecue, so he began
experimenting with his Weber at home.
In the meantime, he was also
introduced to the woman who would capture his heart -- Amy. Their
relationship became "official" during the Thanksgiving weekend
in 1997. They went to
Rosedale in Kansas City, and Amy impressed Kyle when she showed no
reserve in digging into the best barbecue she ever had. With Amy's support, Kyle continued to experiment with barbecue cooking.
Kyle's barbecue made him especially popular among his friends and colleagues
at Oklahoma University's School of Meteorology.
In the summer of 2001, Kyle and Amy moved West to the San Francisco Bay
area. Last July, they attended the West Coast Championship in San
Benito, where they met other Association members. Although Kyle
had attended the American Royal many times, the West Coast contest was the first
event that he attended in order to learn
about competing. The cooks and judges and other volunteers were
very helpful, and they encouraged Kyle and Amy to participate in future events.
Kyle and Amy were married in August and are still
settling into their new home. But soon they will begin to compete.
Perry and Julie Smith
Perry and Julie are natives of Southern California. They have shared cooking duties
since they were married in 1987. Perry
always enjoyed grilling, and his cooking activities expanded once their
daughter, Raewyn, was born in 1989.
Having an extended family of 50+ meant that the birthday parties
were quite large. Being the
outgoing person Perry is, he holds court at the grill of the various
parks where the parties take place.
The addition of Conor, meant the parties became twice a year
functions. Perry always
bragged that it was his cooking that brought everyone to the parties; in
reality it is Julie's Cakes. The
daughter of a Professional Cake Decorator, she learned all of the tricks
to fantastic tasting and looking cakes.
They also are involved in Living History Reenactments. Portraying an 1840's pioneer
family they spend weekends in Primitive Encampments teaching tourists
how life was in the 1840’s. This
led Perry to slow cooking over real wood in pit’s dug in the ground. Wanting to cook in a similar
fashion at home, an SnP Pro was purchased. Some neighbors enjoyed his Q and
others; well ask about the time the Covina Police Department was called. From there it was to the
Internet to learn more. Finding
a like-minded group of individuals, Perry joined the SCBBQA in 2000. He became the Team of the Year
Chairman in 2001 and continues to serve as the Association's ToY
Chairman.
