What is it that gives barbecued meats that special kick? What makes a particular piece of barbecued meat stand out in your mind?  Is it the dry rub or the hickory-flavored wood smoke? Yes, these surely contribute, but most likely it is the sauce. That magic concoction can turn pot roast into something resembling real barbecue.
