Email accounts for members
One of the benefits of membership in the California Barbecue
Association is the opportunity to have an email address in the following
form:
MemberName@cbbqa.com
This will explain the process for setting up an email account.
Email address
Members may obtain an email address on the cbbqa.com server. The first step is to
email the webmaster to request
an email. Many excellent email addresses are available with your
first name and the first letter of your last name.
Alternatively, you may select your own unique address (such as
BBQ_Ray@cbbqa.com or
DuelingBubbas@cbbqa.com).
Cost and time limit
At the present time, the Association is not charging any additional
amount for email addresses on the Association's mail server. This may
be changed in the future if, for example, the Association is required to
pay additional amounts for its mail server.
There is no time limit for members to continue to use their email
addresses, so long as the email address is not misused (for spam, porn,
floods, etc.) and so long as the member remains in good standing.
Forward email
Members with an email account have two ways to retrieve their email:
forward it or POP3 it.
Forwarding works like this. When an email is sent to the member
at MemberName@cbbqa.com, the
email will be received by the Association's computer, and then the
association's computer will automatically send the email to the member's
own email account.
For example, suppose that a member's email address is
george@cbbqa.com and that George also
has an email account called george@earthlink.net. The forward mail solution means that all mail
sent to george@cbbqa.com gets automatically forwarded to george@earthlink.net
This is the solution that most members will elect.
POP3 mail
For advanced computer users, there is a second way to retrieve their
email. Rather than having the Association's computer (called a
mail server) forward the email to a different mail server, the member
may elect simply to use the member's own mail program to retrieve the
email directly from the Association's mail server. This is call
POP -- "post office protocol" -- and is the preferred method for
advanced users.
The following are the settings for members to POP their email:
Incoming POP3 Server: mail.cbbqa.com
User: MemberName (the first part of the email address)
Password: (see below)
Members should use their own ISP's SMTP server for outgoing email.
These settings are configured differently for each mail program but
are not difficult for many users. Each member should select
his/her own password.
