Notice of CBBQA Internet chat session: how members keep in
touch
IRC
IRC means "Internet Relay Chat" and is the Internet's original
messaging program. These "chat" or "messaging" programs permit
computer users to type in real time with other computer users on the
Internet. Whatever is typed by one person is seen by others.
Other popular messaging programs include:
- AOL Instant Messaging
- Yahoo IM
- MSN IM
- ICG
The advantage of IRC over the others is that IRC is independent of
the operating system and much more universal.
Reason
CBBQA has directors and members all around the US, and IRC seems like the best solution for members to get
involved and stay connected on a regular basis. The Associations
Treasurer, Roger Cole, realized the
benefit to the members of using IRC to stay in touch.
During last
week's chat session, both David Klose in Texas and David Spriggs in
Washington joined members in the Bay Area, Los Angeles area, San Diego and
elsewhere to talk about plans for upcoming events, including the World
Championships and other matters.
With IRC, directors and members from
all around the U.S. will be able to get information, make suggestions,
ask questions, and the like.
Agenda
At last week's meeting, there was no formal agenda, and the session
seemed to go pretty smoothly. This week, there will be an agenda, and
everyone is welcome to add anything of their concern. The agenda so far
includes the following items so far -- and we'll try to go in Agenda
order on Thursday. This is for the first hour -- the "general chat"
session.
- The May 11 Shake Rattle & Smoke -- the rules, registration, cost,
etc.
- The June 29 Paul Kirk Class -- status and questions
- The July 4-7 events at Imperial, which include: a CBJ class; a
cooks' dinner and fireworks show; a KCBS contest (qualifier); a World
Championship contest (rules questions are welcome); a Saturday night
party; a Sunday Paul Kirk class
- The July 13 West Coast contest in Hollister -- rules,
registration, Bluegrass festival, etc.
- Other matters (open discussion)
The agenda for the Board of Directors meeting has not yet been set. Email me if you have any items to include.
How-To
Here are the detailed steps to get the program, install it, configure
it, and then use it to join the IRC chat sessions.
Note: The following is
courtesy of Jansen Elliott -- Thanks, Jansen! This explains how to
use an IRC program called mIRC -- which is one of many, many different
programs available.
Note, you have to go through all these steps only ONE TIME -- after
that, it's just point and click. Here's how to do it the first
time.
First, download
Get the IRC chat program called mIRC. The program is free for use
by the Association when used for CBBQA chats (you are urged to register
it if you want to use it for non-CBBQA chat sessions). To get the
program, visit
http://www.mirc.com and follow these detailed steps (this assumes that you are using a
version of Windows):
- Click on "download and try mIRC 6.01"
- Click on any North American site
- Save locally
- Use the default location to save the file
Second, install
After the download is complete, click on the saved file,
"mirc601.exe", and follow the instructions to install the program.
- Double click the saved file "mirc601.exe"
- Follow the instructions
- Click "Next" to begin
- Click "Yes" to accept licensing
- Click "Install"
- Click "Finish"
Third, configure
Start the mIRC program for the first time and configure it, as
follows:
- Double click the mIRC icon
- Close the "About mIRC" by clicking on the "x" in the upper right
corner (and so you don't have to look at Khaled's picture anymore)
- Select "DALnet" in the "IRC Network" pulldown menu
- Select the nearest location in the next pulldown menu (i.e. US=United
States, EU=Europe, CA=Canada, etc.)
- Enter your name
- Enter your email (use your cbbqa email if you have it; email joe to
get one, if you don't)
- For a Nickname, enter "[your first name plus first letter of your
last name]_cbbqa", like GaryT_cbbqa
- Enter Alternative(Nickname)
- Click "OK"
Fourth, connect and join
Finally, there are two steps to actually join a channel: first, you
connect to a server, and then you actually join a channel. The detailed
steps are:
- Click File - Connect
- Click the "Close" button on the "mIRC Channels Folder" window
- Click Commands - Join Channel
- Enter "#CBBQA"
- Click "OK"
BINGO! You're now in the channel and can "chat" with everyone
else from CBBQA who is online.
Later, members can learn what all the buttons are for and how to have
their
computers actually "speak", using a special program called a text-to-speech
agent.]
Reserve a nick
A "nick" is a "nickname". In IRC, users are not required to use
their actual names. However, for the #CBBQA channel, members are
requested to use a 'standard' nick, so that everyone can recognize each
other.
The CBBQA standard nick is the member's first name follwed by "_cbbqa"
(without the quotes). Members who share first names should also
include the first letter of their last names.
For example, if Joe O'Connell uses the nick "smokin", not everyone
will know who he is. Therefore, when chatting on the #CBBQA
channel, Joe uses the nick "Joe_cbbqa". Others include
DavidS_cbbqa (David Spriggs) and DavidK_cbbqa (David Klose).
Members can reserve their own nicks permanently, so that others
cannot use them. This means that members will have their nicks
available whenever they need them. Registration is free and can be
done as follows:
- First, connect to DALnet and use the nick that is to be
registered
- Second, while using the nick, type the following command in the
mIRC window, where [password] means your own password (use any
lower- or upper-case characters or numbers) and where [your email]
means your own email address:
/nickserv register [password] [your email]
- Third, the server will immediately send an email to that email
address. To complete the registration, follow the instructions
in the email.
Once registration has been completed, the nick is available as
follows. Whenever a member first logs on (or changes to) the nick,
the server will report the following message:
-NickServ- This nick is owned by someone else. Please
choose another.
-NickServ - If this is your nick, type: /msg
NickServ@services.dal.net IDENTIFY <password>
-NickServ - You now have 20 seconds to change your nick. If you
do not comply, I will change your nick for you. This is your final
warning.
To confirm that you are the owner of the nick, simply type the
following command in the mIRC window:
/msg NickServ@services.dal.net IDENTIFY <password>
In a moment, mIRC will display the message (where [your nick] is the
correct nick):
-NickServ- Password accepted for [your nick]
In future sessions, the registered nicks will always be available to
those who registered them.
Members can put their nicks in mIRC by clicking:
- File
- Options
- Connect
- Nickname (insert the correct nick)
